First week in May

To me, the first week in May is really the beginning of butterfly season.
You may have seen some early Spring species such as Cabbage Whites, Mouring Cloaks, Eastern Commas and a few others.
May 2, I went to Allegan SGA in search of a few "better" Spring butterflies. I was given a place in Allegan SGA for Olympia Marbles.  It did not disappoint. Two Olympia Marbles were flying.
Also in the same locations were 2 Eastern Pine Elfins.
Michigan 2015 total - 12 species

  1. Good to hear that the season has started there. Normally I would expect April to be the start of the season here. It did start, but stopped again in the middle of April and it hasn't warmed up since. It is looking better today, but the forecast isn't very promising.
